Hello 2013!!!! This year is a great opportunity for all of us. The nonsense of the election and the political rants of the past two years are behind us. No matter what party line you side with it’s time to take control of your life and not worry about Washington and start embracing the life you are living. Today is the beginning of something big in your life. It may be as simple as an attitude change or as complicated as a major belief change.
I purposefully waited to today to start blogging again because by now most people’;s resolutions are starting to get less sticky. I remember as a kid we used to play with these things call sticky hands (visit http://astretchyhand.com/ for digital sticky hand game). When you would throw this thing against the wall it would stick for a little bit and then slowly start falling off and eventually fall to the ground. That’s the way resolutions are. They stick for a bit and then fall off.
I could list numerous reasons they don’t stick, but all these reasons stem from one source, people don’t really know what they really want. I mean deep down inside at the depths of the soul want. I believe most people struggle with this. I know there are times when I do and these are the times when I feel like a hamster in a wheel because I’m not aiming at something. We get ideas of what we think we should want and what others want us to want, yet truthfully most people haven’t a clue.
Every year for the past many years I ask myself “what do yo want from this year,”. There are times when its clear and others where it takes a while. Take time to really think this through. If you don’t know what you want you are chasing the wind as King Solomon would say. That is my favorite phrase right now, chasing the wind. He, Solomon, discusses how he obtains everything a man could truly want in life; fame, fortune, power, women and more money and women. I mean this guy was loaded, perhaps the richest man ever to live. He had chariots, soldiers and the finest of everything and he says it’s all meaningless. I believe what he is saying that the pursuit of these things to merely have them is meaningless. He goes on to say to enjoy the blessings of God which include some of these things, but he warns of being foolish in chasing them.
What we want is not things or money, what we want is peace, joy and success. Find out what those mean to you. There are seven areas of your life that you need to define what success looks like for you: 1) Spiritual Health 2) Physical Health 3) Mental Health 4) Professional Life 5) Financial Life 6) Close Relationships (Family / Friends) and 7) Community Relationships
Start writing what you want from these areas of your life. What do you want your day to day to look and feel like? Just free write for 10 to 15 minutes and you’ll be surprised what comes to mind. Your lists may be a simple change or giant dream in each area. It’s yours embrace it. Next week I’ll be discussing how to overcome obstacles that can derail your dreams and bring it back to your wants.
Finding out what you really want is the first step to making 2013 a great year.
It’s a blessed life,
Joseph Cortez
