Full Parentpreneur Mode Means Flexibility

Last night we got a call from our normal babysitter saying she was not going to be able to watch our 17 month old daughter, Joss.  My wife works on Mondays and she couldn’t take off.  All of our back up sitters were booked. Fortunately in the real estate world I don’t have to go to the office to work. As long as  I have a cell phone and computer I”m good to go.  Today  I was able to spend the day working with my beautiful little girl at home.  The day started with the soon to be 4 year waking up earlier than normal soon followed by the baby. The race was on to get Ayla, my older daughter to school.  For some reason the usual easy task was quite difficult today because she was in a funk.  After dropping  Ayla off, I took Joss with me to an inspection, to the office and home for a nap. Being at home I was tempted to get chores done and work. I did my best to get dishes done while on the phone trying to keep a deal together that by days end was on life support.

Days like this are always tiring and extremely rewarding. Parentpreneurs everywhere battle with this same issue at times. What do you do when you have a sick kid home from school or the baby sitter cancels? You do what great parents and great entrepreneurs do, you adapt and face the challenge.  I found myself working really hard  during the hour of nap she took. I took her on appointments and made it fun for her. Joss seemed to have blast when she wasn’t crying.  I discovered she really doesn’t like getting in and out the car seat so much.  Our time together was great and we really bonded over apple sauce, cold pizza, e-mails and your baby can read videos.

This morning I knew the day was going to be tough. I just made a commitment to myself to keep a good attitude.  I remained grateful that I have a business where I can be home with her when needed. That’s one of the reasons many people start a business, the ability to be flexible. Business and parenting require flexibility because both have unknown challenges.  If you remain flexible and look for the good things in your situation you’ll have a better end to the day poopy diapers and all.

Till next time stay flexible,
Joseph Cortez
