I was having a conversation with a friend earlier today and the subject of being too comfortable came up. We were discussing the fact that a lot of people, including us, can’t seem to rise up to full potential. I have heard that the middle class have a harder time becoming rich than the poor do. Why is that? I believe it’s because its harder to get off the couch than it is the floor. The middle class is an extremely comfortable place to be. We have nice cars, nice houses, the bills are usually paid, credit is available and for the most part its easy to live comfortably. The poor (don’t start on the poor is a mindset thing, I’m there with you, just go with the word poor for know) have a lack of comfort. We have all heard stories of folks that have overcome all sorts of obstacles to succeed. Stallone was so poor he sold his dog and then wrote Rocky, which became a billion dollar franchise. The whole story is really cool and inspiring. Oprah was raped and poor as a teenager and now is one of the richest women in the world. They both struggled and had very tough lives. They both had an existence that was truly uncomfortable and demanded massive change to overcome.
The middle class, self included, live in a giant comfy sofa, in front of the tv, soda in one hand, remote in the other and 500 channels set to entertain. Some of us even have a fridge next to the couch. I’m not saying there no problems in the middle class. People have struggles and financial issues, however in the midst of all this the majority is comfortable. The poor and those with major obstacles are living on the floor where it’s hard, dirty, and cold. Everyday is a reminder that change needs to happen. They also usually have a giant why behind the change.
People are much more likely to get off the floor and get moving to do stuff than they are when sitting on the sofa watching TV.
Maybe it’s time to get uncomfortable. Go do something that challenges your status quo. Go get help where you need it, have the tough conversation, take the risk you’ve been waiting to take. This goes way beyond just finances. In our relationships, attitudes, health, and other areas we get to comfortable.
Get off the couch and on the floor and see what moves you to get up.
Till next time – live life uncomfortably and see what happens.
