Belief Systems Help You Make Choices

I am currently preparing for a speech I am giving on Saturday to several hundred teenagers, mainly seniors in high school. The topic of the speech is on making good choices. I have previously spoken at this event about the process of making good choices and analyzing a decision. Last year I spoke about how choices can make you a champion.  This year as I was contemplating the speech I realized that what affects each of our choices are our  core belief systems. Many of your decisions are made well before the choice is presented because of your belief system.

If you have never studied or thought about your belief systems it’s a life changing experience. Over the next several posts I will be discussing belief systems in greater detail.

Each belief system you have will change how you see the world and live your life. If you believe that getting debt free will change the way you live you will begin to make decisions to get there. However if you believe that buying new stuff will make you happy you won’t care about debt as much.

There are several core beliefs that will change your life. The main one to think about this week is what role you believe God plays in your life.  How you answer this questions will change how you pray, what your worry about and how often, how you see others, how you love, how you love yourself. If you see God as your heavenly father and trusts his word you will act differently than somebody who sees God as a vengeful God out to discipline you for every wrong. Maybe you see God as an impartial third-party who has bigger things to worry about than your life. Perhaps you don’t believe in him at all.  What ever your stance is will change your life.

Each belief you have makes up who you are.  Take time to write your beliefs both good and bad and question them. It is then that you will begin to know your self better.
